Affiliate marketing programs affect nearly every online interaction
but most people know nothing about them. They can be a bit mysterious
and many are incredibly complex, but the basic system is quite
simple. In theory affiliate programs create a symbiotic relationship
among merchants, advertisers and affiliates. An affiliate may
be any site on the Web and the whole system is supervised by a
program provider or manager.
Affiliate marketing is often confused with viral marketing. Although
affiliate marketing programs may be part of viral marketing programs
they are not the same. Viral marketing works on a broader scope
to produce product or service awareness through any number of
social networks. It is most often associated with the Internet
but it also includes word of mouth delivery.
On the Internet, affiliate marketing programs only contribute
to viral marketing because they involve advertising. Funny or
sexy ads, flash games and video clips are all forms of viral advertising.
The whole idea is based on natural human behavior and the hope
that people will voluntarily pass messages along. Customer satisfaction
is important because people are much more likely to complain to
friends about a product or service they don’t like than
they are to rave about one they do.
